KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE (1989)

Posted by: REY. on: March 19, 2006

I like the movie. Very much!

At the age of thirteen, Kiki has to do her witch training by going to another city away from his parents and learn to fit in with the outside world on her own. Using her mother’s broom stick and accompanied by her black cat, Jiji, Kiki flew on that very night. She falls in love with the city that has the clock tower which she saw from above, and she decided to settle here.

Kiki realises that she doesn’t have any other witch talents apart from flying on a broomstick. She got an idea to use her talent to do the courier service with the support from Osono, the owner of the local bread shop, who gave Kiki a shelter to crash in.

Growing up is part of the story. Sometimes Kiki feels sad that she cannot wear the colourful dress like any girls her age. As a witch-in-training, she can only wear a plain black dress with red big ribbon on her head. She is friendly with people but she also learns that not everyone is a grateful person. I was very touched seeing Kiki tries to make a living with whatever abilities she has, watching her earning for living as best as she could so that she won’t be a failure. I cried with her when she got a fever and gigled when she was on the propelled-bike acting like pro-racer. She’s a funny girl!

What I really like about the movie is the way the communication flows between the characters. It doesn’t feel like an animation movie. They talked real with heartily laugh and humane jokes. The drawings are pretty with clear lines and colours. Simple and clean. I love the small details such as when Kiki ran fast and almost got slipped from falling leaves on the ground and I also like the painting made by the artist in the forest. That was a great painting, you should see it yourself. I watched the English version and Kirsten Dunst’s crunchy voice suits Kiki very well (Dunst has a very sweet and childish voice). Another great production from Studio Ghibli of the famous Hayao Miyazaki. Love it.

My rating: 5/6
