When the Englishmen sailed off to the New World, their mission was to find gold and to build civilization on that land. Captain James Smith (voiced by Mel Gibson) was the bravest man of all and there’s nothing that could scare him away. He was determined to fight any savages he could find at the New World. However, instead of savages, he met Pocahontas (voiced by Irene Bedard/ singing by Judy Kuhn), the native girl who taught him to look and appreciate the earth from a different view.
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew
Pocahontas is the daughter of the Indian Powhatan Chief. She has been having a weird dream about a spinning arrow. When her father returns from a journey, she was told that she will be married to Kocoum (voiced by James Fall), the best warrior in the village. The plan worries Pocahontas because she believes that her dream is telling something about her future choice and marrying Kocoum wouldn’t be fun because he’s so serious and he never smiles. Pocahontas pours her confusions to Grandma Willow (voiced by Linda Hunt), an ancient talking tree of wisdom.
Despite the potential war between the newcomers and the native Indians, John Smith and Pocahontas shared an affectionate bond between them. While having a secret meeting near Grandma Willow, Pocahontas’ best friend Nakoma (voiced by Michelle St. Johns) sent Kocoum to follow her. Kocoum got shoot by Thomas (voiced by Christian Bale), who followed John Smith as an order from by the fat/annoying/greedy Governor Ratcliff (voiced by David O. Stiers). John Smith was arrested by the Indians for Kocoum’s death.
Urged by her love for John Smith and for peace, Pocahontas covered up John Smith’s head with her own just before the Indian Chief swung the hammer (or axe?). She saved the tribe from having the war with the early English settlers.
There are too many romances on the movie for kids to see and the animals played part as unnecessary (or shall I say not funny) supporting creatures. The type of music on the movie would suit Broadway stage with no doubt. The best song is definitely ‘Colours of the Wind’ which won the Oscar in 1996, sang by former Miss America, Vanessa Williams. This is my first time watching Pocahontas but way back to 1996, I have loved the song a lot. I even still use the word ‘blue moon’ inspired by this song because it sounds cool when I need to say ‘never or unlikely’ on indirect term. Overall, it’s okay to be watched by teenagers (thirteen) and up.
My rating: 3/6
