THE UPSIDE OF ANGERS (2005)

Posted by: REY. on: May 28, 2005

A mother and her four daughters tried to figure out why their husband/father left them for his Canadian secretary, without care to say goodbye. Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen) was so full of angers, alcoholic (mostly martini) and was within life breakdown perhaps because of age and definitely because of her feeling being betrayed by her husband. Her condition is worsen by having four unique teenage daughters.

However, I saw the family as a very nice one. The girls have different tastes of anything (clothes, activities, kind of boyfriends, dreams etc) and somehow instead of competing each other, they actually very supportive one to another, even to their mom who seems to be very motherly when sane and extremely bossy and weird when intoxicated.

Their father’s friend, Denny (Kevin Costner), was becoming Terry’s drinking companion. He seemed to be genuinely liking her and always tried to find reasons so that he could stay for dinner in the house. Denny himself is a famour radio jockey and used to be a famous celebrity from playing baseball. Terry and Denny’s relationship grew more each day and they are very fond to each other. Of course not instantly, but through process that involved helping the kids with their problems too.

The real story about her husband was revealed in the end. Quite honestly, I kinda expect that since the middle of the movie, especially every time they were talking about the backyard. But I am not going to tell here what it’s all about ;)

A good drama-comedy movie, worth watching, funny and melancholic with good casts too. Definitely suits mature audiences only. The movie used autumn background so it plays a lot with white, orange, brown colours for visual. Very calm and peaceful, especially for someone who’s watching it from the second row of the cinema: like me!! (If that was an action movie, my eyes will be totally ruined. Moral of the story: enter the theater early!).

So, what’s the upside of her angers? She got a potential new husband who is loved by her children and who loves her children (hehehe…)

My rating: 4/6
